![]() ![]() The key to these types of repairs is to go slowwwwwwly and evenly. At this point I don't think jacking up the ridge will pull the walls back into plumb, but it could make pulling them back with the cables quicker and easier. It looks like the studs weren't nailed to the bottm plate very well. Here’s a formula I use to determine tie force: T W/2 x H/h x run/rise, where W equals rafter load, H equals height of ridge, and h equals distance from ridge to center of tie (illustration, below). The unbraced gambrel roof produces an irregular pentagon with no built in stability. Roof rafters are horizontal beams that support the weight of your roof, and they need to be braced properly to prevent them from bending or breaking under heavy loads such as snow or wind. A triangle is inherently stable, resists deformation by outside forces. Gable rafters plus rafter ties produce a triangle. ![]() After you have the stud walls back down where they belong you could plate them with some 3/4 plywood screwed to the studs and bottom plate and screw or lag the bottom plate down to the joists below or add collar ties. The unbraced gambrel roof is unstable compared to a properly constructed gable rafter roof with rafter ties at the wall stud tops. It looks like you may not have the head clearance for that. Once it was back where it belonged, I left the cables in place as permanent support. I once pulled a sagging garage roof back using that method. ![]() It has a steeper upper slope and a shallower lower slope. Shed Gambrel Intersecting Roof construction As mentioned earlier, most roof design is. A gambrel truss is a type of roof truss with a double-sloped design, commonly used in barns and other agricultural buildings. It didn't sag in a few days and it will take some time to pull it back. But installing them generally eliminates the attic. Framing the gambrel roof involves installing the ridge board, constructing the roof trusses, and installing collar ties and jack rafters. Left click, release and drag in top diagram to directly measure full scale dimensions. you'd need to do several runs and pull it back over a period of time. You could consider running some cable from top plate to top plate with a turnbuckle and gradually crank the walls back into plumb. ![]()
